The Nigerian education system

The educational system in Nigeria is divided into 4 stages which are

1.       The pre-school stage (kindergarten stage)

2.       The primary education

3.       The secondary education

4.       The tertiary education

The pre-school stage consists of the kindergarten classes where student first encounter formal education. Here they are primarily thought English words and spellings and they may encounter simple mathematics in its many forms. Students are usually between the ages of 2 and 5.

The primary education stage consist of six classes that teach students a lot ranging from health-education to civics-education, core subjects like mathematics, English and Nigerian languages such as Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. The student are helped to be creative by teaching them fine/creative arts, vocational studies, music  and a whole lot more that makes this period a vey memorable experience for the student. Science is not left out as the student take a subject called elementary science which aims to introduce them to the sciences.

The secondary education is divided into two stages of three years each. These are the junior secondary school and the senior secondary school. The transition from the junior school to the senior school is only after passing a very important examination which is the junior secondary certificate examination. The choice of subject a student decides to take at the secondary school level will determine the kind of courses he or she can apply to take at the university. The subjects on offer are divided into tracts consisting of about nine subjects or more. The tracts are

1.       Science

2.       Arts

3.       Commercial

The subjects taught in senior secondary schools are listed below:

Three year spent in senior secondary schools cumulate in a final o-level examination that then determines if a student proceeds to university. Of course an individual might decide not to proceed further at any stage he or she completed.

Most students however usually proceed to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education that abound the country. At universities they get a bachelors degree after an average of 4 years, engineering courses take 5 years, medicine and law takes 6 years each. Universities also offer maters program and PhD for those that would like to go into academics. A parallel system is the polytechnic which offers higher national diplomas after 5 years of study.

How to make money rearing snails

               Rearing of snails can be a very productive pastime in Nigeria. It needs little input in terms of human effort. The African giant land snail is the common specie of snails in Nigeria, and luckily it is edible. Its scientific name is  Achatina fulica.  Starting up a backyard snail farm relatively easy compared to other animal farms. In Nigeria costs should range from about 500 naira to about 10,000 naira. Of course there is no limit to the amount of capital used for start up. The advantage is this is a business that can be started with a low as 500 to 1000 naira.

               Snails are very prolific animal that lay eggs and they do not need to mature before they start laying eggs. They usually are not affected by diseases but may be attacked by insects that crawl on the ground such as termites, ants etc. Just make sure the snail cage is really partitioned from other areas

               Since you literally do not o anything to set up a snail farm other than to buy some small snails, keep them in a secluded moist area and feed them leaves or starchy foods then it means you have a high turnover i.e. high profit margin after sales.

               Not all snail types grow up to become big. So make sure before you buy baby snails at the market ask the trader for a specie that is suitable for rearing. You will get snails in any of the big markets around.

               When your snails are fully grown you can sell them back to the traders you brought them from as babies or sell them to all the numerous roadside food joints. You can also sell them to bigger retail foods outlets like zartech but you would have to register your farm with the corporate affairs commission to do that. It takes about six months for snails to grow to maturity.

Warning: Snails must not come in contact with salt. Do not give them food waste that contains salt in them.

When the French colonized certain parts of Africa they met people who already had customs, values and traditions but they nevertheless embarked on a policy to turn the Africans into French people. This was not something new in the annals of history, throughout medieval times nation have sought to conquer nations so as to expand their boundaries, spread their cultures and or civilizations thus effectively turning the conquered nations into their own people.

The French went on to teach the people the French language, the French customs, the French history and a whole lot more. Things at the time that might have elevated the French language, culture and tradition to an elite level and would be aspired for by the ’locals’.

But the whole process never fulfilled it’s aims.
