The French policy of assimilation in African colonies.
When the French colonized certain parts of Africa they met
people who already had customs, values and traditions but they nevertheless
embarked on a policy to turn the Africans into French people. This was not
something new in the annals of history, throughout medieval times nation have
sought to conquer nations so as to expand their boundaries, spread their
cultures and or civilizations thus effectively turning the conquered nations
into their own people.
The French went on to teach the people the French language,
the French customs, the French history and a whole lot more. Things at the time
that might have elevated the French language, culture and tradition to an elite
level and would be aspired for by the ’locals’.
But the whole process never fulfilled it’s aims.
